IISD's Nichole Dusyk says doubling down on LNG makes no sense given the environmental ramifications and the fact the international market has a glut of natural gas. "What we've seen with other LNG projects in Canada is that they don't move ahead without generous public subsidies and support that raises really important questions about that economic viability."
"Many importing countries are shifting away from expensive and imported gas and towards cheaper, more reliable renewables," says IISD's Steven Haig. "This means that when it comes to the economic benefits of LNG, Canada is late to the party, and that party is almost over."
