Ivetta Gerasimchuk

Director, Energy Program, International Strategy

Ivetta Gerasimchuk is Director for International Strategy in IISD’s Energy Program, where she leads work on international coalitions, political strategy, and partnerships related to the transition away from fossil fuels. She also serves as Head of Secretariat of the Coalition on Phasing Out Fossil Fuel Incentives Including Subsidies, which is hosted by IISD and brings together governments from the Global North and South to advance collective and domestic action on fossil fuel subsidy reform. Based in Geneva, Ivetta works at the intersection of energy transition strategy, public financial flows, and international governance, with a focus on turning high-level political commitments under the G7, G20, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, World Trade Organization, and the variable geometry of transitioning away from fossil fuels into credible implementation on the ground.

Over more than two decades, Ivetta has led research, strategy, and advocacy on just, equitable, and orderly transitions away from fossil fuels, including fossil fuel subsidy reform and clean energy scale up, and green responses to crises. Her work spans engagement with governments as well as in-country support on energy pricing, taxation, and planning. Her country experience includes Canada, China, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Russia, and the EU’s Eastern Partnership countries, among others.

Before joining IISD, Ivetta held research positions at WWF Russia, the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, the Cyprus International Institute of Management, and the Australian Embassy in Moscow. Trained in international relations, management, and economics, she holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations, a master’s degree in management, and a PhD in economics from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, where her research focused on the environmental management of transnational corporations.
