Protecting Revenues in the Age of Critical Minerals: Key lessons in addressing tax avoidance in the mining sector
As major economies race to secure supply chains for the energy transition, resource-rich countries face a once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure this boom translates into lasting economic benefit. Yet, with billions in public revenue lost to corporate tax avoidance each year, capturing a fair share of revenues from mining remains a critical challenge. This webinar will map the main sources of tax avoidance in mining and share practical solutions to combat tax avoidance in the sector.
Growing demand for critical minerals is creating unprecedented potential for financial benefits across mineral-rich countries in the Global South. However, revenue leakage continues to drain vital public resources.
To mark the launch of a new deep dive analysis on base erosion and profit shifting in mining, to be released end of September, IISD and the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Metals, Minerals and Sustainable Development, are hosting a webinar mapping the main sources of tax avoidance in mining and sharing practical solutions for resource-rich countries to safeguard mining revenues during the critical minerals boom.
Drawing over a decade of hands-on work alongside governments, tax administrations, and international partners, the session will share examples of how countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America are building expertise in combatting tax avoidance, designing and enforcing efficient fiscal strategies, and concretely securing fair revenues.
As momentum builds toward October's EITI 2026 Global Conference and the the IGF’s Annual General Meeting, this webinar offers an early look at one of the main challenges facing resource-rich countries today.
The webinar will include a presentation by mining tax experts from IISD, intervention from government officials and civil society. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.
