The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: Implications and Compliance for Viet Nam's Steel and Aluminum Sectors
The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has entered its definitive phase, bringing new costs and reporting challenges for exporters in covered sectors. This 2-day training series offers Viet Nam-based producers, exporters, and industry representatives in the steel and aluminum sectors practical guidance on compliance requirements and strategies to reduce CBAM liabilities.
About the Event
The EU CBAM entered its definitive phase in January 2026, replacing reporting-only obligations with binding compliance and financial costs on EU importers of covered goods. For steel and aluminum exporters in Viet Nam, this introduces new challenges regarding competitiveness, emissions reporting, and verification.
In collaboration with the Foreign Trade University, the International Institute for Sustainable Development is hosting a 2-day training series in Ho Chi Minh City, offering practical, sector-specific guidance to help firms understand and meet their CBAM obligations.
During the workshop, participants will
- gain an understanding of how embedded emissions are calculated and monitored under definitive-phase CBAM rules,
- learn when and how actual emissions data can be used instead of default values, and the cost implications of each approach,
- explore verification requirements for actual emissions data,
- examine how production routes and upstream inputs affect reported actual emissions and CBAM charges, and
- receive updates on future developments, including proposals for downstream expansion.
