The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: Vietnam exporters’ training
The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has entered its definitive phase, bringing new costs and reporting challenges for exporters in covered sectors. This 2-day training series offers Viet Nam-based producers, exporters, and industry representatives in the steel and aluminum sectors practical guidance on compliance requirements and strategies to reduce CBAM liabilities.
About the Event
The EU CBAM entered its definitive phase in January 2026, replacing reporting-only obligations with binding compliance and financial costs on EU importers of covered goods. For steel and aluminum exporters in Viet Nam, this introduces new challenges regarding competitiveness, emissions reporting, and verification.
In collaboration with the Foreign Trade University, the International Institute for Sustainable Development is hosting a training in Ho Chi Minh City.
The workshop, dedicated to the steel and aluminium sectors, aims to provide a practical dialogue platform for Vietnamese producers, exporters, industry representatives and policymakers to exchange experiences and discuss challenges related to the implementation of the EU CBAM.
The workshop will begin with Vietnamese businesses sharing their practical experiences, preparedness efforts and implementation challenges in responding to CBAM requirements. Discussions will focus on concrete issues faced by firms, including emissions data collection, monitoring and verification requirements, reporting obligations, supply chain transparency and compliance costs.
Building on these business perspectives, experts and practitioners will provide practical insights on:
• key principles and latest developments of the EU CBAM;
• calculation and reporting of embedded emissions;
• monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) requirements;
• implications of production processes and upstream inputs for CBAM liabilities;
• opportunities and challenges related to carbon pricing and carbon market developments in Vietnam.
The workshop will also provide an opportunity for interactive dialogue among businesses, technical experts and policymakers on possible solutions, support mechanisms and policy priorities to help Vietnamese enterprises better prepare for the CBAM transition period and future compliance requirements.
