​Learnings from Implementing NbS for Adaptation in and around Protected Areas

​About the Event 

Protected areas (PAs), including national parks, nature reserves, and community conservancies, are a critical yet often underused tool within the ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) and nature-based solutions (NbS) toolkit. They have strong potential to strengthen climate resilience for both people and nature.

​The ecosystem services provided by protected areas support local, national, and international efforts to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate. These services include supporting nature-based livelihoods, mitigating flood risks, purifying water, promoting soil health, protecting pollinators, and regulating the climate, among many others.

​So, how do we ensure these ecosystems thrive and continue to deliver climate adaptation benefits?

​Evidence from four diverse landscapes demonstrates that well-designed and effectively implemented nature-based solutions can deliver tangible adaptation benefits for protected areas and the communities that depend on them.

​The Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative, a 3.5-year project, implemented nature-based solutions to strengthen climate resilience in and around protected areas across four diverse landscapes: Belize, Fiji, the Greater Virunga Landscape, and the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. The project generated practical lessons on what it takes to design and implement NbS for adaptation effectively, including the importance of comprehensive climate risk assessments, gender equality and social inclusion (GESI), and meaningful engagement and ownership by local communities.

​This one-hour webinar will: 

• ​Highlight the role of protected areas and NbS in climate adaptation, and why they matter for building resilience for both people and nature
• Explore enabling conditions for successful NbS implementation, drawing on lessons from the CAPA Initiative
• ​Showcase successes and lessons learned from implementing the CAPA project across four diverse landscapes
