Study: Existing oil, gas, and coal extraction sites need to be closed down to stay within 1.5°C, findings show

Ceasing new oil, gas, and coal development is not enough—already built extraction facilities must be prematurely decommissioned—warns a new study released today in Environmental Research Letters.

Study warns developed fossil fuel reserves will need to shut to meet 1.5C limit

Stopping new oil, gas and coal developments is not enough to limit dangerous global warming – existing sites will also need to be shut down, a study warns.

Existing Fossil Fuel Fields and Mines Must Be Closed to Meet 1.5°C Goal, Study Finds

In 2021, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that, in order to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, no new oil and gas fields or coal mines could be developed.

'Not enough to halt new projects' | Existing oil & gas fields must be plugged to hit Paris goal: report

Along with shelving new hydrocarbon production developments, operational oil and gas fields and coal mines must be rapidly wound-down to stop 'locked in' emissions from speeding global heating, says new Oil Change International-led study.

Shut down fossil fuel production sites early to avoid climate chaos, says study

Nearly half of existing fossil fuel production sites need to be shut down early if global heating is to be limited to 1.5C, the internationally agreed goal for avoiding climate catastrophe, according to a new scientific study.
