Toward a Coherent, Transformative Approach to Financing Sustainable Development, Climate, and Nature
IISD's submission for the Fourth Financing for Development Conference
The Fourth Financing for Development Conference (FfD4) offers a crucial opportunity to create an integrated approach to financing climate and nature work and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This publication outlines four key proposals to align financing frameworks, enhance sovereign debt relief, provide practical guidance for domestic resource mobilization, and foster greater coordination across finance communities to support sustainable development.
Developing countries face a financing gap of trillions of dollars annually to meet the SDGs, address climate change, and protect biodiversity. Current financing approaches are fragmented, often competing for limited resources. This publication presents four proposals for the FfD4 to create a more coherent and effective system. Key ideas include integrating climate, nature, and development finance frameworks, expanding sovereign debt relief, providing practical domestic resource mobilization guidance, and fostering collaboration through multi-stakeholder platforms to drive sustainable, long-term progress.
