Charting Opportunities at the Nexus of Climate and Trade in Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa

Trade policy can be a powerful tool for advancing climate action in Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa. IISD conducts research, engages stakeholders, and provides strategic recommendations to align trade policies with climate goals, focusing on key sectors like food, agriculture, and energy transitions to drive sustainable economic growth.

IISD is exploring how trade policies and practices can better advance climate action in Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa. The project focuses on the food and agriculture sector, as well as industries critical for climate action—such as heavy industries that need to be decarbonized and those driving energy transitions. It will identify key trade and climate policy levers that can boost emissions reductions, improve livelihoods, enhance food security, and support the transition to more sustainable economies.

The project will involve mapping out the most important policy- and market-driven changes needed in each region, followed by in-depth analysis of stakeholders—governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and advocacy groups—who are actively working to shape trade and climate policies. By understanding what has worked and what challenges and gaps remain, IISD will provide strategic recommendations on how targeted philanthropic investments can amplify positive change.

Supported by the ClimateWorks Foundation, and through local partnerships and rigorous research, IISD aims to ensure that trade policy becomes a tool, rather than a barrier, for advancing climate goals. The project will deliver clear insights on how to support fair and sustainable trade in ways that align with the priorities of local actors and the global climate agenda.
