Informal Preparatory Meeting for the 42nd UNCITRAL WGIII Session

This informal preparatory meeting brought together developing and emerging economies to prepare for the 42nd session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group III (WGIII), which took place from February 14 to 18, 2022. WGIII is charged with reforming how disputes are settled under investment treaties—a process called investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS).

The preparatory meeting focused on the following topics:

• The Standing Multilateral Mechanism: Focusing on the selection and appointment of ISDS tribunal members and related matters.
• The Draft Code of Conduct for Adjudicators of International Investment Disputes: Focusing on Article 4, as well as implementation and enforcement.
• Wider issues related to ISDS reform that were not on the 42nd session agenda.

It was hosted in partnership with CCSI, IIED, and the South Centre. It is part of a series of preparatory and debriefing meetings we organize to support developing country delegates to participate effectively in the UNCITRAL WGIII ISDS reform process.
