Integrating Investor Obligations and Corporate Accountability Provisions in Trade and Investment Agreements
The objective of this interactive expert meeting is to map out a pathway toward including investor obligations and accountability mechanisms in trade and investment agreements.
The objective of this interactive expert meeting is to map out a pathway toward including investor obligations and accountability mechanisms in trade and investment agreements.
To do so, we will take stock of what already exists in terms of obligations, processes and mechanisms. Based on this, we will explore what substantive provisions and procedural mechanisms would be desirable to include in trade and investment agreements and how these could be formulated.
We look forward to creative discussions leading to concrete and innovative options. The meeting will take place in an informal setting, de-linked from any specific negotiation. The meeting will be held under the Chatham House Rules.
In advance of the meeting, IISD will provide participants with a background paper proposing how investor obligations and mechanisms could be integrated in trade and investment agreements. We will build on recent investment treaties and trade agreement chapters on sustainable development, environment and labour, as well as other instruments and scholarly research.

The private meeting is co-hosted by IISD and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and will be held in Versoix, Switzerland, January 11–12, 2018.
