Discussion Ahead of Swiss Vote - Is time up for nuclear energy in Switzerland and around the world?
In light of the upcoming Swiss vote on the planned exit of nuclear energy Initiative «Sortir du nucléaire» on 27 November 2016, a discussion will be held within the framework of the Geneva Environment Network, in collaboration with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and with the participation of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
This event will take place on Tuesday 22 November 2016, from 12:45 to 14:00, at the International Environment House II.

This event will take place on Tuesday 22 November 2016, from 12:45 to 14:00, at the International Environment House II (7-9 ch. de Balexert, Geneva.)
The focus will be on the popular initiative, which seeks to forbid the construction of new nuclear power plants and limit the duration of exploitation of power plants already in service. It also aims to limit overall energy consumption, improve the country’s energy efficiency and promote renewable energy sources.
The event will address the following topics:
-- Potential risk of aging power plants
-- Alternatives to nuclear energy
-- Incentives for switching to renewables
-- Consequences of CO2 emissions
-- Costs of dismantling power plants and the question of nuclear waste
The event will be chaired by Nathalie BERNASCONI-OSTERWALDER, head of the Economic Law & Policy program of IISD. Short presentations will be made by Peter WOODERS, IISD's Group Director on Energy, Scott FOSTER, Director of UNECE's Sustainable Energy Division, and Richard BRIDLE, Project Researcher at IISD's Global Subsidies Initiative. An open discussion will follow.
