Hans Herrmann

Hans Herrmann is a longtime friend to IISD and is currently working with the Water program. He is a marine ecologist with expertise in the planning, creation and execution of biodiversity conservation programs addressing such wide-ranging issues as marine protected areas, climate change adaptation, bird migration, conservation of migratory species, the impact of invasive alien species, and the effects of transgenic corn in Mexico. He has also been a passionate and effective campaigner for the establishment of networks of marine protected areas in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Mr. Herrmann has worked in several positions of leadership with private sector, government and environmental professionals. He founded the Shearwater Institute, an international organization, and is its Senior Director. For eleven years, as Head of the Biodiversity Conservation Program of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), he led the development and implementation of a North American cooperation strategy for the conservation of biodiversity. Prior to that, Mr. Herrmann was the General Director of Pronatura Nacional, the largest NGO devoted to the conservation of biodiversity in Mexico. He was also the Science Director at the Scientific Research Centre of Quintana Roo (CIQRO), where his main responsibility was the management and coordination of scientific research in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, in the Yucatan Peninsula
