Hans Baumgarten

Strategic Advisor

Hans Baumgarten is the strategic advisor for the Economic Law and Policy team at IISD.

Hans works closely with the Senior Director of the Economic Law and Policy program, providing guidance on key international economic policy issues such as trade, investment, taxation, mining, infrastructure, sustainable finance, and agriculture. He also acts as program liaison with research and policy analysts, as well as the communications team.

Before joining IISD, Hans worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country office in Paraguay as project coordinator managing a diverse portfolio, and later as a private sector and sustainable development specialist. He led the development of UNDP’s private sector and sustainable finance strategy in Paraguay.

Prior to that, Hans worked as an economic affairs officer at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in the Division on Investment and Enterprise. He was part of a team that provided policy advisory services on investment to developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Hans holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in international affairs from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

He speaks English, Spanish, and intermediate French.
