Chelsea Rochman

Research Fellow, IISD-ELA

Chelsea Rochman is a research fellow with IISD Experimental Lakes Area. She is also an assistant professor in Ecology at the University of Toronto and a scientific advisor to Ocean Conservancy.

At the world’s freshwater laboratory, she is currently leading scientific research projects and policy related to plastic pollution and plastic waste, with ongoing projects on microplastics (including a whole-lake experiment) and macroplastics.

Chelsea received her PhD in Ecology from a joint program between University of California, Davis and San Diego State University in 2013. Chelsea has been researching the sources, sinks and ecological implications of plastic debris in marine and freshwater habitats for more than a decade. In addition to her research, Chelsea leads international working groups about plastic pollution, presents her work in policy-related conferences and forums, and co-founded the University of Toronto Trash Team.
