The International Institute for Sustainable Development periodically produces briefing documents on different issues relating to trade and sustainable development. This particular series was produced at the request of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). SDC has generously agreed that the briefs should be given a wide audience through IISD's Web site.

Each of the papers focuses on an issue of particular importance for sustainable development in the South in the World Trade Organization’s current round of negotiations—the so-called Doha Development Agenda. The aim of the series is to set out, in brief and uncomplicated style, what is at stake in those negotiations for those concerned with international development and the environment.

Most trade issues—especially those being negotiated as part of the Doha Round in the World Trade Organization—are changing constantly. These briefs were up-to-date at the time of writing.
