News: Government spending takes centre stage in Dominican election campaign

With presidential elections taking place later this month, the government of the Dominican Republic has announced a slate of new subsidy schemes that the opposition are labeling ill-conceived election posturing. President Leonel Fernandez of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD by its initials in Spanish) is fighting for at least 50% plus one of the vote in the 16 May elections, in order to avoid a runoff under Dominican elections law.

The European Union will disclose details of recipients of EU fisheries subsidies as part of a broader program to boost transparency. Under new Commission regulations all Member States are required to list the names of the beneficiaries and the amount they received.

On March 26-28, 2007, The Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) and the Forum of Environmental Journalists of India (FEJI) organized a Media Forum in Mumbai, India. The forum, which brought together 25 journalists from across India, took as its focus the role of subsidies in contributing to the agrarian crisis in India, with particular reference to the suicides of farmers.
