About this lake

Located right next to the camp, Lake 239 is an important part of the everyday lives of people at the facility.

Whether it is watching the loons, participating in our annual triathlon, or enjoying the sauna on the shores of the lake, everyone who has visited the IISD-ELA field station has enjoyed the peace and serenity that this beautiful lake has to offer.

Lake 239 is the most comprehensively studied long-term reference lake at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area. It is a headwater lake with three inflow streams collecting water from across its catchment area. Calculating how much water goes in and out of Lake 239 is critical to understanding water flow across the region and working out similar water and chemical budgets in other lakes.
