Advancing Producer Engagement: Insights and recommendations for voluntary sustainability standard-setting organizations

Author: Sara Elder

VSSSOs are increasingly focused on enhancing producer engagement to improve the effectiveness, inclusivity, and impact of sustainability standards. Producer engagement is the meaningful involvement of producers in shaping standards that affect their livelihoods—from information sharing to leadership in decision making. When done well, producer engagement strengthens the relevance and legitimacy of sustainability initiatives.

However, engagement practices vary widely, with producers often facing barriers such as limited benefits, logistical challenges, and diluted representation through intermediaries. To address these issues, VSSSOs must adopt clear principles of good engagement to ensure producers can actively shape standards and policies that reflect their realities.

This commentary, based on round tables and research carried out by the International Institute for Sustainable Development, outlines current engagement practices and recommends new ways forward. It calls for stronger commitments to transparency, tailored approaches to inclusion, and support mechanisms that align with producers’ livelihoods. Strengthening producer leadership and maintaining ongoing, accessible engagement channels are essential to building trust and ensuring long-term impact.
