What might be the future of the environment in Canada and what would this mean for Canadians?
In June 2006, the Environmental Foresight & Priorities Division (EFPD) of Environment Canada initiated a multi-year project with IISD to carry out research, methodology development, capacity building and pilot activities in support of the development of an Environment Outlook for Canada (EOC). The EOC will be tailored to national conditions and priorities, while learning from the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Global Environment Outlook project, as well as other relevant international and national outlooks and assessments.
EFPD is the departmental lead for the project, which will also be governed by a steering committee consisting of members of other groups within Environment Canada and a multi-stakeholder advisory committee drawing from other federal departments; Canadian councils (such as the Canadian Council of Resource Ministers); Canadian federations (such as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities); and subject area specialists deemed beneficial to advancing the goals of the project. As such, the project will make use of the best available tools, processes, models and data from Canada and around the world.
IISD, EFPD and the Policy Research and Intelligence Division (PRID) of Environment Canada will comprise the core project team.
