Change is increasingly occurring at the global level, calling for measurement and assessment frameworks and tools that span across nations and regions.
Given that human societies are increasingly effecting change at a global level, it is often no longer sufficient for countries to take individual action. Instead, collaborative high-level assessments are needed. These, in turn, may provide frameworks for assessment and planning at sub-global levels.
While there are no global conventions on measurement and assessment at present, there are a number of international and global institutions and processes that are actively involved in leading and designing assessment processes that address cross-cutting issues and processes. The policy context for these may be provided by multilateral environmental agreements, the Millennium Development Goals and other multilateral instruments. Some of these initiatives include:
The global and international assessments with which we are involved tend to cut across issues, scale and institutions; integrate retrospective and forward-looking perspectives; and are policy focused.
