Thank you.
It is important to measure and assess the progress being made towards sustainability by many organizations working in different contexts and on different scales. These entities may include municipal, provincial or national governments and government departments; development agencies; multilateral organizations; corporations; or groups concerned with development issues in a regional or sectoral context.
On a strategic and selective basis, IISD works with partner organizations whose objective is to establish and maintain indicator, assessment and reporting systems, often in the context of integrated planning and strategy development efforts. The scope of these initiatives ranges from community-scale initiatives to regional assessments, sectoral indicator systems or global reporting programs.
IISD's role ranges from project leadership and facilitation to serving as a contributor and analyst and producing specific content. Involvement provides not only opportunities for learning, but also possibilities for testing innovative ideas associated with the design of integrated assessment systems, the construction and use of indicators and aggregate indices, and the development of sustainability strategies.
Global and International Scale
Collaborative and high-level assessments that cross scales, issues and institutions are needed to address change that is currently happening at global and international levels.
National and Sub-national Scale
Assessments are an integral part of the policy process and therefore often occur at national and sub-national scales.
Community Scale
Community and local government organizations are often the ones that most directly interact with the public and where stakeholders are able to have direct input into planning and assessment processes.
Sectors and Themes
Sectors provide an entry point for many policy issues that cut across scales, issues and institutions.
Business
Corporate sustainable development reporting is one way that business seeks to understand its interaction with communities, our environment and the economy.
