Canadian Sustainability Indicators Network (CSIN)

CSIN is a one-of-a-kind Canadian network with a mission to foster sustainability indicator development and the effective use of sustainability indicators in decision-making. CSIN works towards realizing the potential of indicators in achieving systemic and measurable progress towards sustainable development.

CSIN furthers the development and use of sustainability indicators across Canada. Over 230 indicator practitioners are brought together by the network to share, learn and collaborate. As sustainability indicator practice continues to expand world-wide, CSIN plays a potentially vital role in raising the bar of indicator practice at national, provincial, municipal and community levels, ultimately leading to a society that is better equipped to make decisions in our complex world.

Through CSIN's cross-country Learning Events, practitioners come together in groups of 12-15 people to discuss relevant topics. Live Meeting technology is used to share presentations online during teleconferences. Topics have ranged from policy uses of indicators, to setting indicator targets and developing different types of indicators, such as cultural, environmental and sustainability indicators. The CSIN Web site and listserv further support information sharing and CSIN manages a growing database of Canadian sustainability indicator practitioners. CSIN also provides networking opportunities through side events or panel discussions at conferences.

IISD's Measurement and Assessment program serves as the CSIN Secretariat while 15 CSIN members form an Advisory Committee. CSIN members come from all levels of government, NGOs, academia and consulting sectors, from all parts of Canada.
