
The 1990s witnessed a steep rise of interest in measuring and assessing progress towards the elusive goal of sustainability. Initiatives aimed at developing and testing comprehensive sets of sustainability indicators gave rise to a community of indicator practitioners.
IISD has been a founding member of the International Sustainability Indicators Network (ISIN) and its Canadian version, the Canadian Community of Sustainability Indicator and Reporting Practitioners (CCSIRP). Both ISIN and CCSIRP are young and lean, and function as communities of practice driven by the interests of their members.
