Early Lessons from Implementation of Climate Change Adaptation Projects in South-eastern Africa

Summary: The "Early Lessons" workshop brought together over 50 project managers and policy-makers from southern and eastern Africa to share their experiences with and plans for implementing projects that seek to reduce the vulnerability of communities to the impacts of climate change.

Across south-eastern Africa, various organizations are developing or implementing projects specifically designed to support adaptation to climate change. The "Early Lessons from Implementation of Climate Change Adaptation Projects in South-eastern Africa" brought together representatives of a number of these organizations to share experiences and encourage the establishment of a more strongly linked community of practice in south-eastern Africa.

Objectives

Provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations implementing climate change adaptation projects in south-eastern Africa to learn from each other's experiences in identifying, selecting, designing, seeking funding for and implementing adaptation projects that improve the quality of life of the project recipients.
Increase the knowledge of government policy- and decision-makers of the linkages between climate change impacts and sustainable development, and the actions that can be taken to reduce vulnerability at the local and national level.
To initiate an informal regional adaptation network within south-eastern Africa.

Rising Temperatures, Rising Tensions: Climate change and the risk of violent conflict in the Middle East

In a region already considered the world's most water scarce and where, in many places, demand for water already outstrips supply, climate models are predicting a hotter, drier and less predictable climate in the Middle East. Climate change threatens to reduce the availability of scarce water resources, increase food insecurity, hinder economic growth and lead to large scale population movements. This could hold serious implications for peace in the region.

This report examines whether the legacy of conflict in the Levant undermines the ability of the region to adapt to climate change, outlines the threats that climate change could pose to regional security, and suggests strategies that can be pursued for peace and sustainable development despite a changing climate.
