Country Data

We built our analysis around two groups of countries: those that have already achieved agricultural transformation and those that have yet to do so. The former group of transformed countries have moved from being highly reliant on subsistence agriculture to having successfully integrated agriculture into their macroeconomy. In some cases, these countries are now industrialized economies. The latter group of focus countries are in the earlier phases of transformation and were chosen partly for having high levels of agricultural employment and undernourishment.

We placed these countries in their “transformation contexts”—such as whether they began with high birth rates and scarce but fertile land, or abundant and fertile land—and mapped out their transformation trajectory over the years 1970 and 2015. This data is available below and can be viewed either at the individual country level or collectively.
