It underpins the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Accord and the new international commitments on nature and biodiversity.\u202fDespite its wide-ranging benefits, nature-based infrastructure is not being scaled up enough to fulfill its potential. This is because our knowledge of the performance, predictability, and financial viability of nature-based infrastructure has\u2014until now\u2014been limited.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the MAVA Foundation, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), IISD established the Nature-based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NBI Global Resource Centre\u202faims to bring together key partners to establish a business case for nature-based infrastructure. class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of NBI valuations&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.za\/our_research\/publications\/?37422\/making-a-case-for-investing-in-nature-based-solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green roofs and urban trees, South Africa<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This WWF&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.za\/our_research\/publications\/?37422\/making-a-case-for-investing-in-nature-based-solutions\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> makes the case for the inclusion of nature-based infrastructure at Rainbow Junction, a new greenfields development situated in Tshwane, using the SAVi tool to address future climate impacts. The cost-benefit analysis conducted was informed by multipliers from the international literature to assess the impacts of green roofs and urban trees and value carbon storage, energy reduction and stormwater retention benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/project\/pellys-lake-and-stephenfield-reservoir-manitoba-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pelly\u2019s Lake, Canada&nbsp;<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pelly\u2019s Lake is a natural lake and wetland in Pembina Valley in Manitoba (Canada). Stephenfield&nbsp;Reservoir was built in 1963 for the storage of water for irrigation and domestic water supply. Our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/project\/pellys-lake-and-stephenfield-reservoir-manitoba-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAVi&nbsp;assessment<\/a>&nbsp;showed that&nbsp;Stephenfield&nbsp;Reservoir is a very cost-effective solution for storing water and enabling irrigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let&#039;s Talk about Natural Infrastructure...\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qgCRh-D1XAg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/project\/lake-dal-in-srinagar-state-of-jammu-kashmir-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Dal, India<\/a>&nbsp;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/project\/lake-dal-in-srinagar-state-of-jammu-kashmir-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAVi&nbsp;assessment<\/a>,&nbsp;we analyzed long-term conservation measures for Lake Dal, a major natural asset of India in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Untreated domestic sewage and encroachment from informal dwellings have&nbsp;a severe negative impact on the lake\u2019s water quality,&nbsp;fishery,&nbsp;and local tourism. The&nbsp;SAVi&nbsp;assessment evaluated an upgrade of the sewage treatment plants in combination with the construction of an artificial wetland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/project\/conservation-of-the-saloum-delta-in-senegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saloum Delta, Senegal&nbsp;<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Saloum&nbsp;Delta in Senegal is a tropical mangrove ecosystem that supports the livelihoods of more than 100,000 people, for instance by filtering water, providing fuel wood, and supporting fish stocks. Climate change and the unsustainable use of mangroves put pressure on the services the Delta delivers. Based on our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/2020\/11\/restoring-a-mangrove-forest-as-sustainable-infrastructure-development-experience-from-the-saloum-delta-senegal\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAVi&nbsp;assessment<\/a>, the ecosystem services of the&nbsp;Saloum&nbsp;Delta are worth CFA 3,589 billion (EUR 5.47 billion) over 40 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/savi-wetlands-sardinia-italy\" target=\"_blank\">Wetlands, Italy<\/a>&nbsp;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wetlands&nbsp;S\u2019Ena&nbsp;Arrubia&nbsp;and&nbsp;Corru&nbsp;S\u2019Ittiri-Marcedd\u00ec-San Giovanni in Sardinia, Italy, support local tourism, agriculture, and aquaculture. However, climate change and human influences burden the ecosystems. Under the current trend of degradation, the wetlands generate ecosystem services worth EUR 306 million over 40 years. Our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/savi-wetlands-sardinia-italy\" target=\"_blank\">SAVi&nbsp;assessment<\/a>&nbsp;showed that protecting the wetlands can allow for an additional EUR 171 million in services. Furthermore,&nbsp;reusing local livestock manure for biogas and organic fertilizer production offers a net benefit to the community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/savi\/story\/how-a-belgian-municipality-is-using-agroforestry-as-a-solution-for-climate-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agroforestry, Belgium<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The municipality of&nbsp;Welkenraedt&nbsp;in Belgium plans to use agroforestry to adapt to climate change. Growing trees and hedges on farmland provides multiple benefits, such as increased agricultural yields, biomass production, and reduced heat stress on livestock. Based on our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/savi\/story\/how-a-belgian-municipality-is-using-agroforestry-as-a-solution-for-climate-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAVi&nbsp;assessment<\/a>,&nbsp;the agroforestry project in&nbsp;Welkenraedt&nbsp;brings a net benefit of EUR 3.9 million over 20 years. Planting and maintaining the 100,000 m\u00b2 of trees and hedges costs about EUR 600,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"\/savi\/story\/including-climate-risk-in-urban-infrastructure-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stormwater, Johannesburg&nbsp;<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city of Johannesburg in South Africa faces severe climate risks. To avoid further damages from flash flooding, the city upgraded the stormwater infrastructure in the Paterson Park Precinct. The chosen hybrid solution combines a concrete culvert with a&nbsp;renaturalized&nbsp;stream section. Our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/savi\/story\/including-climate-risk-in-urban-infrastructure-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAVi&nbsp;assessment<\/a>&nbsp;showed that this hybrid infrastructure provides a higher return on investment than grey solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nature-based infrastructure\u202f(NBI)\u202flies at the heart of climate change action.
