{"id":2399,"date":"2020-06-30T10:29:15","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T17:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iisd.org\/savi\/?page_id=2399"},"modified":"2021-07-09T11:20:34","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T18:20:34","slug":"c3s-data","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/c3s-data\/","title":{"rendered":"C3S Data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"112\" src=\"https:\/\/iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-1200x112.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-1200x112.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-300x28.png 300w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-768x72.png 768w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-150x14.png 150w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-450x42.png 450w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-600x56.png 600w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EC-Cop-ECMWF-C3S-horiz_png-1-900x84.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various types of&nbsp;infrastructure assets&nbsp;can&nbsp;have the potential to provide important benefits, from new jobs to ecosystem services, and avoid significant costs.&nbsp;Assessing these costs and benefits, however, requires a full understanding of the climate-related risks and externalities, which can only come from world-class data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;International Institute for Sustainable Development<\/a> (IISD)&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ke-srl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KnowlEdge<\/a>\u202f(KE)&nbsp;therefore joined forces with the<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Copernicus Climate Change Service<\/a>&nbsp;(C3S), one of the six thematic information services provided by the&nbsp;E<a href=\"https:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U\u2019S Copernicus Earth Observation Programme.<\/a>&nbsp;Under this contract, we&nbsp;integrated&nbsp;world-class data on climate into&nbsp;our&nbsp;Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi)&nbsp;tool.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C3S is operated by the&nbsp;European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts&nbsp;(ECMWF) and is home to the landmark Climate Data Store, which provides a&nbsp;single-entry&nbsp;point for continuously updated climate data and products on the past, present, and future. This data comes from satellite and in-situ observations and models. \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IISD and KE\u202fintegrated this data\u202finto our assessments to generate sophisticated&nbsp;SAVi&nbsp;analyses on the costs of climate-related risks&nbsp;and externalities.&nbsp;We applied&nbsp;this approach&nbsp;to four\u202f<em>use<\/em>\u202fcases of infrastructure projects in their design phase:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/savi\/story\/including-climate-risk-in-urban-infrastructure-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\">New and upgraded housing and commercial developments in a proposed \u201ceco-district\u201d in Johannesburg, South Africa<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/savi\/story\/including-climate-risk-in-urban-infrastructure-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stormwater management upgrades in a proposed \u201ceco-district\u201d in Johannesburg, South Africa<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/project\/c3s-use-case-hydropower-in-tanzania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A hydropower project in northern Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/story\/how-a-belgian-municipality-is-using-agroforestry-as-a-solution-for-climate-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agroforestry and climate adaptation in Welkenraedt, Belgium<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card-450x253.png 450w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/savi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/SAVi-Infographic-Card-900x506.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with providing valuations of these projects, the use cases can also inform the policy priorities of local and national&nbsp;policymakers&nbsp;as they seek to fulfil their national and international climate commitments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The insights developed from these assessments show governments, investors, and project developers why low-carbon, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient infrastructure brings the most attractive returns to capital holders and the public alike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/integration-climate-data-savi-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed report<\/a>\u202foutlines&nbsp;how we have updated our&nbsp;SAVi&nbsp;model to incorporate Copernicus climate data. It includes a literature review and an in-depth overview of our analytical process for selecting and integrating climate indicators.
