{"id":8431,"date":"2021-06-24T08:46:55","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T13:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cf.iisd.net\/itn\/?p=8431"},"modified":"2024-08-09T18:31:47","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T16:31:47","slug":"outlook-for-the-eu-china-comprehensive-agreement-on-investment-unclear-as-eu-parliament-votes-to-suspend-ratification-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2021\/06\/24\/outlook-for-the-eu-china-comprehensive-agreement-on-investment-unclear-as-eu-parliament-votes-to-suspend-ratification-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Outlook for the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment Unclear, as EU Parliament Votes to Suspend Ratification Efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On May 20, 2021, the European Parliament voted to suspend ratification efforts of the \u201cin principle\u201d Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) with China.<\/p>\n<p>The deal must be approved by the European Parliament and the <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips117'>EU<\/span> Council, which consists of all 27 heads of state, before it can become law.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2021\/03\/23\/eu-and-china-announce-an-in-principle-investment-agreement\/\">Announced in December 2020<\/a> after seven years of negotiations, the <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips116'>EC<\/span> paused the deal\u2019s ratification following Beijing\u2019s sanctions of five European officials. These sanctions were themselves a reaction to sanctions of Chinese officials by several Western countries in response to the Chinese government\u2019s treatment of the Uighurs in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2021\/05\/04\/eu-suspends-efforts-to-ratify-controversial-investment-deal-with-china\">EuroNews<\/a>, earlier in the month, the EC released the following official statement: \u201cIn this context, Chinese retaliatory sanctions targeting Members of the European Parliament and an entire parliamentary committee are unacceptable and regrettable.
