{"id":8213,"date":"2020-12-19T07:44:39","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T13:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cf.iisd.net\/itn\/?p=8213"},"modified":"2024-08-09T18:31:28","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T16:31:28","slug":"eu-investment-screening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2020\/12\/19\/eu-investment-screening\/","title":{"rendered":"EU investment screening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips117'>EU<\/span>\u2019s foreign investment screening mechanisms became operational on October 11, 2020.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2020\/06\/20\/european-commission-releases-guidance-for-fdi-screening-in-response-to-global-pandemic\/\">reported<\/a>, guidance on the screening mechanisms, which are implemented by individual member states, was released in March 2020 following the 2019 entry into force of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_19_1532\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips68'>FDI<\/span> Screening Regulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since April 2019, the <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips116'>EC<\/span> and member states have made preparations for the implementation of the framework by establishing a mechanism for the exchange of information on FDI projects that are subject to screening; developing procedures to respond to FDI which may pose a security risk; and updating the list of \u201cprojects and programmes of Union interest\u201d on which the EC will issue opinions <a href=\"https:\/\/trade.ec.europa.eu\/doclib\/docs\/2019\/june\/tradoc_157945.pdf\">to be followed<\/a> by member states when assessing foreign investment into these projects.
