{"id":5837,"date":"2018-12-21T08:52:14","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T14:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/?p=5837"},"modified":"2024-08-09T18:29:20","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T16:29:20","slug":"european-union-moves-swiftly-toward-adopting-regulation-on-screening-foreign-direct-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2018\/12\/21\/european-union-moves-swiftly-toward-adopting-regulation-on-screening-foreign-direct-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"European Union moves swiftly toward adopting regulation on screening foreign direct investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 20, 2018, the European Parliament, Council and Commission <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-18-6467_en.htm\">reached political agreement<\/a> on an <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips117'>EU<\/span> framework for screening <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips68'>FDI<\/span>, and on December 11, 2018, the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament <a href=\"http:\/\/trade.ec.europa.eu\/doclib\/press\/index.cfm?id=1953\">endorsed the political agreement<\/a>. The stated objective of the framework is to protect the strategic interests of the EU, its member states and enterprises\u2014including security and public order\u2014while remaining open to foreign investment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meetdocs\/2014_2019\/plmrep\/COMMITTEES\/INTA\/AG\/2018\/12-10\/1171525EN.pdf\">draft EU Regulation<\/a> will create a cooperation mechanism for the exchange of information between EU member states and the commission. It will also encourage international cooperation on screening policies, including sharing experiences, best practices and information on investment trends.
