{"id":5669,"date":"2018-10-17T08:34:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T13:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/?p=5669"},"modified":"2024-08-09T18:28:58","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T16:28:58","slug":"australian-labor-party-drops-opposition-to-cptpp-vows-to-remove-isds-bilaterally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2018\/10\/17\/australian-labor-party-drops-opposition-to-cptpp-vows-to-remove-isds-bilaterally\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Labor Party drops opposition to CPTPP, vows to remove ISDS bilaterally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On September 10, 2018, the Australian Labor Party (Labor) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2018\/sep\/11\/labor-drops-opposition-to-trans-pacific-partnership-trade-deal\">dropped its long-standing opposition<\/a> to the 11-nation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2018\/04\/24\/comprehensive-and-progressive-agreement-for-trans-pacific-partnership-cptpp-signed\/\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips17'>CPTPP<\/span><\/a>, clearing the way for the agreement to pass the Senate. The Australian Greens and the Centre Alliance strongly criticized the move, accusing Labor of selling out. Union representatives\u2014including the Australian Council of Trade Unions, the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Electrical Trades Union\u2014also felt betrayed by the party.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonclare.com.au\/media\/speeches\/4070-comprehensive-and-progressive-agreement-for-trans-pacific-partnership-implementing-legislation-\">statement to the House of Representatives<\/a>, Labor trade spokesman Jason Clare stressed that the party \u201cdoesn\u2019t support the inclusion of <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips43'>ISDS<\/span> clauses in trade agreements,\u201d but highlighted that the CPTPP extended ISDS to Canada only. Australia already has bilateral agreements with ISDS with the other CPTPP partners.
