The agreement was approved by 408 Members of the European Parliament and rejected by 254, with 33 abstentions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2016\/12\/12\/ceta-signed-canada-and-european-union-to-work-expeditiously-on-creating-a-multilateral-investment-court\/\">As reported in <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips60'>ITN<\/span><\/a>, this approval paves the way for provisional application, which is expected to occur in the next few months, once Canada also ratifies the agreement. Provisions on investment protection (including the Investment Court System [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2015\/11\/26\/investment-court-system-proposed-by-european-commission\/\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips72'>ICS<\/span><\/a>]), portfolio investment and related provisions from the financial services chapter will only enter into force after national ratification by individual <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips117'>EU<\/span> member states, a process that can take several years.<\/p>\n<p>After the vote, European Commission President\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/trade.ec.europa.eu\/doclib\/press\/index.cfm?id=1624&amp;title=European-Commission-welcomes-Parliaments-support-of-trade-deal-with-Canada\">Jean-Claude Juncker said<\/a>: \u201cThis progressive agreement is an opportunity to shape globalization together and influence the setting of global trade rules.
