{"id":310,"date":"2009-10-01T10:31:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T15:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/itn.mattrock.ca\/2009\/10\/01\/advisory-committee-submits-report-on-the-united-states-model-bilateral-investment-treaty\/"},"modified":"2013-02-01T04:04:37","modified_gmt":"2013-02-01T10:04:37","slug":"advisory-committee-submits-report-on-the-united-states-model-bilateral-investment-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2009\/10\/01\/advisory-committee-submits-report-on-the-united-states-model-bilateral-investment-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"Advisory committee submits report on the United States model bilateral investment treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: andale mono,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>By Damon Vis-Dunbar<br \/>\n2 October 2009<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An advisory committee to the U.S. Department of State and the Office of the United States Trade Representative has issued its report on the United States\u2019 model bilateral investment treaty.<\/p>\n<p>The United States is reviewing its model <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips63'>BIT<\/span> with an emphasis on three topics in particular: (a) dispute settlement provisions; (b) state-owned enterprises; and (c) financial services issues. The U.S. model BIT, which is carefully adhered to in U.S. negotiations over bilateral investment treaties and investment chapters in free trade agreements, was last reviewed and updated 5 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The advisory committee report features input from a diverse group of representatives from business, civil society and academia, and showcases areas in which these individuals differ and agree.\u00a0 In August, the U.S. State Department also held a public meeting, attended by more than 70 people, in order to gather feedback on improvements to its bilateral investment treaties.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the advisory committee report is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investmenttreatynews.org\/cfs-file.ashx\/__key\/CommunityServer.Components.SiteFiles\/ACIEP-report-model-BIT.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For further background on the U.S. review of its model BIT, see the <span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips60'>ITN<\/span>\u2019s previous reporting:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: andale mono,times;
