{"id":16001,"date":"2025-01-27T19:27:05","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T18:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stg.itn.iisd.org\/?p=16001"},"modified":"2025-04-30T14:52:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T12:52:40","slug":"modernised-ect-adopted-by-the-ect-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/itn\/2025\/01\/27\/modernised-ect-adopted-by-the-ect-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Modernised ECT adopted by the ECT Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On December 3, 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energycharter.org\/media\/news\/article\/the-energy-charter-conference-adopts-decisions-on-the-modernisation-of-the-energy-charter-treaty\/?tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&amp;tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&amp;cHash=2700d60aa897f2964e644c9e66a97028\">Energy Charter Conference adopted and approved the decisions<\/a> on the modernisation of the Energy Charter Treaty (<span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips67'>ECT<\/span>) at the Statutory Session of its 35th Meeting. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/articles\/explainer\/modernized-ect-doesnt-deliver-for-climate\"><span class='tooltipsall tooltipsincontent classtoolTips32'>IISD<\/span>\u2019s explainer<\/a> sets out, the amendments set to take effect provisionally from September 3, 2025. However, countries have until March 3, 2025, to opt out of this provisional application. The amended ECT will enter into force on the ninetieth day after the deposit with the Depositary of instruments of ratification, acceptance or approval by at least three-fourths of the Contracting Parties. The amendments and such changes and modifications shall enter into force between Contracting Parties having ratified, accepted or approved them.
