SUMMARY:Executive Training on Sustainable Investments in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Increased international investment in agriculture can accelerate sustainable development and help to meet growing food security needs at domestic\, regional\, and global levels. Yet\, if not structured equitably or regulated carefully\, investments can also lead to social and environmental degradation. These risks have only heightened as investments in land for agriculture have become increasingly attractive to foreign investors and host countries alike. \nIn seeking to promote responsible international investment in agriculture and encourage sustainable development\, countries face both challenges and opportunities. These include: developing robust legal and fiscal frameworks; negotiating equitable deals with investors; leveraging investments for greater sustainable development outcomes; and mitigating environmental impacts while protecting human rights. \nTo help stakeholders in addressing these issues\, the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) has developed an annual executive training on international investments in agriculture.

SUMMARY:Topical Issues in Investment Arbitration\, Session 3\, Ne Ultra Petita
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre on Procurement Law and International Investments (CREDIMI) (French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) & University of Burgundy)\, in association with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP\, has organised a series of three seminars on selected topics in investment treaty arbitration. \n\nOver the last three decades\, investment arbitration has emerged as the predominant method for the resolution of investor-State disputes. Its popularity continues to increase among investor claimants but its conduct remains complex and several aspects are still debated. The purpose of this series of seminars is to discuss and debate three specific topics at the fore of investment arbitration\, bringing together academics\, arbitration practitioners and policy advisors in a small international group in Paris.

SUMMARY:Trade\, Investment Law and Public Health: The Philip Morris Saga
DESCRIPTION:UNIGE–IISD Lunch Series on Investment Disputes\nCompanies are increasingly relying on international trade and investment agreements as a tool to challenge domestic regulatory measures. The proceedings backed by Philip Morris and its affiliates are a telling story in this respect. The battlefield challenging states’ regulations on tobacco products has expanded from domestic courts to international arbitral tribunals to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB). What do these cases mean for public health measures and the fight against tobacco consumption? What can be learnt from these cases for the future drafting of trade and investment agreements? Join Benn McGrady and discussants to debate and discuss the Philip Morris cases before investor–state arbitral tribunals and the DSB.

SUMMARY:Investment Conference: Is a Multilateral Investment Treaty Needed?
DESCRIPTION:The World Trade Institute (WTI) of the University of Bern hosts a conference entitled “Is a Multilateral Investment Treaty Needed?” on June 19\, 2017 with the support of the World Economic Forum and the Swiss Network for International Studies (SNIS). \nAttempts at crafting a multilateral agreement on investment have proven repeatedly contentious. The question of whether a multilateral investment agreement is needed\, desirable or politically feasible is thus of considerable policy salience. Even if one believes that a strong case can yet be made in favour of such an agreement whether on substantive grounds or for the needed settlement of investment disputes\, the question remains what kind of agreement should be proposed. This conference plans to debate the many important questions emerging from the negotiation of a possible multilateral framework agreement on investment.

SUMMARY:111th Asil Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What International Law Values\nWell into the second decade of the 21st century\, international law continues to expand on numerous fronts. Yet seemingly intractable global problems persist\, raising vital questions about the field. We often ask whether international law is achieving its goals. In this Annual Meeting\, we seek to consider the normative basis of international law and how those goals are realized in practice. \nDoes international law reflect the values of the international community? How do these values affect the practice and theory of international law? For that matter\, should international law reflect the international community’s values\, and what constituencies ought to be considered in determining what those values are? If international law should not reflect values\, why not\, and what interests are served or harmed by treating this body of law as a value-neutral set of rules? What role should international lawyers play in the shaping of those values and how can the core values of our profession – in all its heterogeneity\, contestation\, and dynamism – be brought to bear? \nThrough the panels and events of the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law\, leading and emerging voices in international legal scholarship\, policy\, and practice will attempt to answer these urgent questions. \nAttendees can expect to participate in:\n\nKeynote addresses by leading figures in international law\nMore than 40 substantive panels on a wide variety of international law topics\nMultiple networking and social events\nInterest Group social events and substantive meetings\nAccess to the leading publishers of international law materials\nOptional Continuing Legal Education credits\nOptional luncheons\n\nSession Tracks:\n\nTerritory\, the sea\, space; the management and regulation of natural resources and energy; climate change and sustainable development\nInternational dispute settlement in its public\, private\, and hybrid modalities (including interstate adjudication and arbitration\, international investment arbitration\, and international commercial arbitration; regional and special courts and tribunals; and other forms of dispute resolution\, including conciliation and mediation); the structural\, operational\, and normative dilemmas of inter-governmental organizations\nUse of force\, armed conflict\, national security\, cybersecurity\, cyberwarfare\, and military technology\nHuman rights\, migration\, labor\, and criminal law\nInteractions among international\, regional\, and national law in their public and private forms: international law as domestic law\, domestic law as international law\, transnational law\, foreign relations law\, international law in domestic and regional courts\, private international law and the conflict of laws\nInternational economic law: trade\, investment\, sovereign debt\, financial regulation\, monetary law\, international intellectual property\, tax\, internet governance\, and other cross-border economic technologies and their associated governance regimes\n\n2017 Annual Meeting Committee Members list
