Joey Simoes
Hydrologist II
Joey Simoes is a hydrologist in IISD’s Water Program.
He provides expertise in hydraulic and hydrologic modelling, system optimization, surface water quality assessments, and geospatial analyses. His research focuses on natural infrastructure projects to improve site selection, design, and management practices to maximize both their primary and co-benefits. This includes model development to spatially target beneficial management practices as part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Eastern Prairies Living Labs, maintaining a multi-year field monitoring and modelling program for prairie water retention sites, and developing tools for the estimation of ecological goods and services resulting from watershed conservation projects.
Prior to working with IISD, Joey provided technical support for hydrologic models developed for resource planning applications at Manitoba Hydro and studied river ice hydraulics through hydrometric monitoring, modelling, and image processing algorithm development using artificial intelligence. Joey is a Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba and holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Manitoba.
