Release of Worldwatch Institute report on biofuels in Washington, DC, June 7, 2006

On June 7, 2006 the Worldwatch Institute, a non-governmental organization, will release its study, Biofuels for Transportation Global Potential and Implications for Sustainable Agriculture, Energy, and Security in the 21st Century. Countries around the world are looking at liquid biofuels (bio-ethanol and biodiesel) as potential substitutes for petroleum products, as a way to boost rural incomes, and as a method of addressing climate change. Not all proposed approaches to their encouragement provide equal benefits, and some biofuels initiatives may even lead to environmental degradation and adverse social impacts. This 420-page report, which promises to examine the economic, social and environmental concerns that surround biofuels, as well as the various ways in which governments are promoting their use, is sure to be widely read, both by critics of liquid biofuels and their supporters.
