{"id":6630,"date":"2018-09-03T15:21:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T20:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/?p=6630"},"modified":"2023-10-04T16:10:02","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T21:10:02","slug":"join-us-field-adding-phosphorus-lake","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/blog\/join-us-field-adding-phosphorus-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Join Us in the Field: Adding Phosphorus to a Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the last fifty years, here at the world&#8217;s freshwater laboratory we have been exploring what causes algal blooms\u2014those smelly layers of green slime that can appear on the surface of lakes.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/blog\/research-highlights\/algal-blooms-matter\/\">algal blooms are our\u00a0raison d&#8217;\u00eatre<\/a>\u00a0as our lakes were set aside initially in the late 1960s to use a new method of scientific research\u2014experimenting on real lakes\u2014to find out what was turning many bodies of freshwater green in North America.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"How We Do Things at IISD-ELA: Researching Eutrophication\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pAOihTRys74?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While we now understand a lot more about what causes algal blooms, the problem still persists, and we are still learning more about the role of phosphorus in the development of algal blooms.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, every week we head out to add phosphorus to Lake 227 as part of our long-term monitoring of the issue.
