
{"id":22682,"date":"2021-09-02T14:24:44","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T19:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cf.iisd.net\/ela\/?p=22682"},"modified":"2023-09-25T13:54:27","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T18:54:27","slug":"four-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-anishinaabemowin-or-ojibwe","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/blog\/four-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-anishinaabemowin-or-ojibwe\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Things You Probably Didn\u2019t Know about Anishinaabemowin (or Ojibwe)"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anishinaabemowin\u2014also known as Ojibwe\u2014is the language spoken by the Anishinaabe people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past 3 years, here at IISD Experimental Lakes Area, we have been working with a group of Elders, language experts, and youth to translate two animated videos explaining our research on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/lesson-plan-ojibwe-translation-researching-mercury\">mercury contamination<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/lesson-plan-translating-research-climate-change-ojibwe\">climate change<\/a> into Ojibwe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now not only have the Ojibwe versions of these videos, but we also put together two supplementary lesson plans\u2014each consisting of a full transcript, sentence breakdown, list of new words, and root word collections.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hope that all-level language learners can benefit from these visual, audio, and grammatical resources and, at the same time, learn about some interesting scientific concepts. Language teachers can also include them in their teaching activities, as suggested in the lesson plans.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking personally, I am a massive language enthusiast and have greatly enjoyed this process.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given that, and the fact that the number 4 is sacred in Anishinaabe culture (and many other Indigenous cultures), I wanted to share <em>four<\/em> interesting aspects about Anishinaabemowin that I have learned.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Creational<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ojibwe language energizes and replenishes itself and does not borrow foreign vocabulary. For instance, many popular languages around the world derive the word for the element \u201ccarbon\u201d from its Latin root <em>carbo<\/em>, meaning \u201ccoal,\u201d including <em>carbone<\/em> in French, <em>carbono<\/em> in Spanish, <em>Karbon <\/em>in Turkish, \u0643\u0631\u0628\u0648\u0646 (Karbun) in Arabic \u2026 you get the gist! This \u201cborrowing\u201d phenomenon is very common in many scientific terminologies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Ojibwe language does not follow the same rule. Instead, the Ojibwe translation of some of the terminologies we encountered was based on the function, the action, and the observer\u2019s understanding associated with these terms.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, <em>carbon dioxide<\/em> in Ojibwe is <strong>mitigoo-inanaamowin<\/strong>, meaning \u201c(the air that) the trees breathe.\u201d You will find many more such neologisms created in the lesson plans.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22692 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b3750661.smushcdn.com\/3750661\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Nancy-and-Jason-Jones-hard-at-work-translating-780x585.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"Two people sit at desks in from of computers in a room\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b3750661.smushcdn.com\/3750661\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Nancy-and-Jason-Jones-hard-at-work-translating-780x585.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 780w, https:\/\/b3750661.smushcdn.com\/3750661\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Nancy-and-Jason-Jones-hard-at-work-translating-360x270.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 360w, https:\/\/b3750661.smushcdn.com\/3750661\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Nancy-and-Jason-Jones-hard-at-work-translating.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 1238w, https:\/\/b3750661.smushcdn.com\/3750661\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Nancy-and-Jason-Jones-hard-at-work-translating.jpg?size=512x384&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 512w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 780px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 780\/585;\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Nancy and Jason Jones (who led the translation exercise), hard at work<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cultural and Spiritual<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Jones, an Ojibwe language teacher and a member of our translation team, explained that there are three forms of translation: literal, implied, and cultural.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three methods were implemented in our translation exercise.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/publications\/lesson-plan-translating-research-climate-change-ojibwe\">climate lesson plan<\/a>, you will notice that some parts of the translation do not follow the order of the English texts. In other words, literal (word-by-word or sentence-by-sentence) translation was replaced by implied translation, where translators interpreted the overall meaning in a way that they observed or understood.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term for the \u201cUnited States\u201d is \u201c<strong>gichi-mookomaanakiing<\/strong>\u201d in Ojibwe, meaning \u201cthe land of the big knives.\u201d This is, according to Jason, an example of a cultural interpretation: long ago, Anishinaabe people would bring their sacred items into battles and carry them on their sides. They saw early Europeans carrying their swords\u2014big knives\u2014by their sides all the time and thought these big knives were their sacred items.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason also explained that there are Elders who speak spiritual Ojibwe\u2014a form of the language that he insightfully described as \u201cbeing loaded with culture\u201d and \u201cuntouched by the residential schools.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, \u201c<strong>gookomisinaan<\/strong>\u201d (literally \u201cour grandmother\u201d) represents \u201cthe moon\u201d in spiritual Ojibwe. In one of the Anishinaabe stories, the hero <strong>Nenaboozhoo<\/strong>\u2019s grandmother turns herself into the moon. That concept, therefore, is forever connected to water and women. This type of spiritual Ojibwe language has been lost over the years, and \u201clanguage helpers\u201d are trying to get it back.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Action-Based<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many languages, including English, are noun-based, meaning that the majority of the words in the language domain are nouns, as opposed to verbs. But the Ojibwe language is quite the opposite in that the majority of its vocabulary consists of verbs (actions) as opposed to nouns (objects).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, the noun <em>mercury<\/em> in Ojibwe is <strong>biiwaabikowaabo gaa-waawaakeshkaag<\/strong>, meaning \u201cthe liquid metal that is (very) shiny\u201d or \u201cthe liquid metal that shines brightly.\u201d That term was created and eventually transformed into a noun form, however, with an action (\u201cshines\u201d) built into it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The action-based aspect of the language, in a way, reflects the teaching of the Anishinaabe Elders in terms of taking <em>responsibility <\/em>and <em>action<\/em> to protect the land and the water.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson plans include the breakdown of each sentence into its root words. However, here\u2019s a story that I love sharing when I speak about this fourth aspect of the Ojibwe language.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elder Nancy Jones asked us, during one of our translation sessions, \u201cWhere is mercury from?\u201d We answered: \u201cMercury is a naturally-occurring element found in rocks.\u201d She followed with another question: \u201cThen why is it considered non-living (inorganic)? Because in Anishinaabemowin, a rock is animate, living, and has a spirit.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elder Nancy\u2019s simple question profoundly changed my way of looking at nature and all the elements we find there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Western science helps us <em>objectively<\/em> observe the environment, which is defined by a separation between the observer and the observed, Indigenous traditional wisdom <em>unites<\/em> the observer and the observed. Nature as a whole is a giant living being, and we are a part of it!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often talk about sharing each other\u2019s worldviews or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/blog\/commentary\/indigenous-western-approaches-environmental-science-integration-means-us\/\">bridging the Western and Indigenous ways of looking at the world<\/a>. But how can we achieve this goal? I believe that language plays a key role.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The language we speak shapes our worldview. Many Indigenous languages are at risk of disappearing. Understanding the importance of a language and helping to find creative ways to preserve and revitalize it can reverse this trend.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I would like to thank the Elders and language helpers for their teachings and for giving me the permission to share those stories in this blog
