{"id":14950,"date":"2020-04-23T10:09:50","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T15:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cf.iisd.net\/ela\/?p=14950"},"modified":"2023-09-25T14:03:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T19:03:45","slug":"three-ways-our-summer-research-season-will-look-different-this-year","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/blog\/three-ways-our-summer-research-season-will-look-different-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Ways Our Summer Research Season Will Look Different This Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t need us to tell you that the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed everyone\u2019s lives and plans for the future; the 2020 summer research season at IISD Experimental Lakes Area is no exception.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While our plans for the summer season are continually evolving as the situation changes, our priority remains steadfast: to safeguard the health of our dedicated team of employees, research partners, and, of course, local communities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means that, initially, we will need to pare down our research season, while making sure essential monitoring and research takes place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>We will work hard to ensure our <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/science-data\/research\/lter\/\"><strong>52-year unbroken dataset<\/strong><\/a> on everything from the temperature and ice depth to the chemistry and fish populations of our lakes <strong>remains unbroken<\/strong>. A very small group of our researchers, under very carefully controlled circumstances, will head out to the site for short trips to make sure those lakes and streams are monitored and to keep our core research and analysis going.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>We won\u2019t be starting any new whole-lake research this year.<\/strong> Experiments we had planned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/remote-lakes-microplastic\/\">discover what microplastics do to fresh water<\/a> and how anti-depressants that get flushed down the toilet affect lake ecosystems will just have to wait. But don\u2019t worry, <strong>that new research <em>will<\/em> get started.<\/strong> Those threats to fresh water are great, but, for now, the threat that COVID-19 poses to the health of the IISD-ELA community is greater.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Back at home?<\/strong> We are all working hard, practising physical distancing, taking lots of meetings online with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/ela\/blog\/photo-essays\/have-a-meeting-at-the-worlds-freshwater-laboratory-virtually\/\">our new IISD-ELA virtual backgrounds<\/a>, and dreaming of returning to the lakes.
