Experimental Lakes Area near Kenora gets $180K in federal funds for planned climate centre

"The Experimental Lakes Area east of Kenora, Ont., has received $180,000 in federal funding to help in the construction of the Centre for Climate and Lake Learning. Terry Sheehan, parliamentary secretary to Melanie Joly, minister of economic development and official languages, and minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), made the announcement Thursday."

Dimple Roy, IISD’s director of water management and a member of the executive council that produced this week’s report, wrote in 2017 that "strengthening co-ordination between proposed watershed authorities, municipal plans, agricultural extension groups, and other local planning entities is necessary." “Takeout containers become my Tupperware and a Ziplock bag in my house has a lifespan of like three years,” says Michael Rennie, associate professor at Lakehead University and research fellow with the International Institute for Sustainable Development Experimental Lakes Area. “A lot of people use grocery store bags picking up pet waste, too, but all of those ultimately go in the trash, so we need to think about reusing these items that we get that are maybe marketed as single-use more times than just twice to really get a benefit from it.”
