Sustainable development viewpoints
Inspirations
Inspirations: The destruction of the third world environment/economy while growing up in Africa.

Concerns and encouragement
I am concerned that the public should have a better understanding of its actions and impacts on the global community (eg. the impact of consumerism on the environment). The Rio Conference has induced some progress towards sustainability. However, a lot more work needs to be done. It is a good thing that more women are taking charge for change!

Changes needed
In order to become sustainable, we need public education that offers alternatives to present unhealthy lifestyles.

Miscellaneous comments
Women and men need to work together to facilitate change. Women cannot do it alone. Blaming needs to stop and creative solutions need to be found.

Education: Trained as both an environmental ethicist and a United Church Minister. Master of Divinity, M.Div. M.A. Environmental Ethics B.E.S., Bachelor of Environmental Studies. Experience/
Employment: Through experience, I can find opportunity to explore the meaning of sustainable community as people seek out healthy lifestyles and as they face transitions in their life cycles. Inspirations
Inspirations: Marilyn Waring's, "If Women Counted" , has helped me demystify economics; E.F. Schumacher's, "Good Work" , has helped me think again about the meaning of work. Both have been important lately.

Concerns and encouragement
List of concerns to be addressed in order to approach S.D. 1) our lack of a solid theoretical understanding of environmental ethics, 2) our inability to live comfortably with a diversity of feminism. Our own rigidity regarding ideology is/can be used against us.

Changes needed
List of changes needed in order to integrate the qualities of S.D. into our society :1)exploration/development of a non anthropocentric worldview, 2) rethinking of our place within, not outside, nature, 3) new economic system that recognizes different kinds of valuing, 4) death of the myth of 'traditional family values', 5) more women in decision-making positions.

S.D. Interest Areas: education, international development, the development of educational programs that meet the requirements of the people within a society and prepare them for self sufficiency, especially women and children.
Education: B.A. (Asian Area Studies & Hist), B.Ed. Experience/
Employment: travel fellowship to India from CIDA, work with youth as counsellor and senior counsellor, volunteer with YMCA-Ins. Kids, co-chair; UNA Human Rights Committee, Van.

Sustainable development viewpoints
Inspirations
Inspirations: I am inspired by my visit to India in 1990 where I lived in a village and worked with the educational services and my work with NGO's that has shown me the lack of certain 'necessities' and the abundance of others - and the misuse of these resources and the people.

Concerns and encouragement

Concerns, I am concerned by the lack of education which then perpetuates the cycle of dependence and exploitation as well as the the lack of 'regard' for females as equal and 'real' human beings.

Changes needed
Changes Needed: There should be a societal change and outlook in the way women are perceived. The public needs to be educated on this matter so we can operate within our own society. I also have observed a lack of self sufficiency in our use of resources. There needs to be more boundary guidelines utilized in the exploitation of resources in order to address the goals of S.D.
