Sustainable development viewpoints
Inspirations
I am inspired through my concerns for women's issues and the desire to get things done for women.

Concerns and encouragement
I am concerned about peoples' awareness of self, confidence in making changes.

Changes needed
We need to change the stereotyped image of women being weak and dependent. The equality between men and women will be realized when the young (boys and girls) are socialized after women role models. Education, information for women and better services should be provided so that women will have the opportunity to upgrade themselves.

Sustainable development viewpoints
Inspirations
Inspirations: I am inspired by the book-Michael Jurdant, "Le defi ecologiste" , and my grandfather who was an honest, simple, caring man.

Concerns and encouragement
I am concerned about the health and quality of the environment in relationship to power and the economy. In order to approach the goals of S.D., we have to integrate these factors and restructure our system.

Changes needed
List of changes needed in order to integrate sustainable development into the system: the economy (changing values education so that over consumption does not rule) working towards local economies with fair trade; power structure-bring women and youth to the decision making places and bring the power of decision making to the places where these people are already involved, ie.community, N.G.O.'s, etc, ; promote small scale sustainable agriculture.

Sustainable development viewpoints
Inspirations
I have been committed to social reform and public service all my life. I became interested in environmental issues during law school and studied the use of mediation to resolve environmental disputes at MIT to further explore alternative approaches for achieving sustainable development.

Concerns and encouragement
What concerns me is that we need processes that can facilitate the deep and perhaps fundamental restructuring of society that will be required to achieve sustainable development. Science alone will not provide the answers.

Changes needed
We need to reform the traditional decision making mechanisms used to make public policy decisions to accommodate and encourage a greater degree of public involvement.

Sustainable development viewpoints
Inspirations
Attending the Fate and Hope of the Earth Conference in Nicaragua was very important to me. I went as a delegate from the Toronto Disarmament Network and came back committed to making the links between peace and environment issues. Since then, I have become much more interested in the urgent need to develop sustainable cities.

Concerns and encouragement
My major concern about sustainable development is that it is relatively easy for people and corporations to say that they are committed to sustainable development while having very little idea of what sustainable development means or what what it will involve in terms of changes to our institutions, lifestyles and relation to nature. The term 'sustainable development' needs to be better defined because in common usage it has come to meant almost anything including business as usual. The challenge for those of us who want to move our society to a truly sustainable path will move beyond the rhetoric and talk about concrete paths and policies for sustainable development, while making clear that some tough choices will have to be made.

Changes needed
Economic analysis, identified with the neo-liberal policies of current governments, continues to serve as the framework for evaluating policy options. This needs to be changed because many of the policy options that need to be considered for a sustainable future do not lend themselves to economic quantification and evaluation- they requrie consideration on moral and ethical grounds since they involve the future of our children and of the earth. Beliefs and ethical values should not be ignored because they can't be easily quantified to fit into traditional economic analysis. So in general, I believe the movement for sustainable development needs to push for a change in the framework which policy debates take place. The impact that actions by governments and corporations have on the environment and people in their communities must be considered and given real importance now and in the future.
