Sustainable development viewpoints Inspirations
Inspirations: Conferences: Miami Conference preparation to UNCED
The Miami Conference Action Agenda People: My Son (who wants me to
heal the ozone layer); My parents- My Mom is an Architect- influenced me in
community planning; Dad is a politician; David Brooks (Friends of the
Earth.) Books: Ecology of Commerce, Paul Hawkins.
Concerns and encouragement Concerns, The
irresponsibility of transnational corporations-- the purpose of creating a
corporation is to avoid responsibility/liability. We can't afford this
evasion today. Environment Canada as a power-voice is not accurately
representing the public's needs. Under the government's excuse of cost-cutting
measures, NGO's are going broke, and are losing their abilities to influence
government and the public.
Changes needed Changes Needed: We need a great deal of support
for the NGO community; public education ; advocacy role; we need to reprogram
the Commission for Sustainable Development; Montreal Protocol and the
International Framework on Climate Change. This change can not be carried out
by the government as credibility will be lost. There must be a Greened budget
by a greened government. As well, the government should subsidize programs for
greened products and greened jobs.
Miscellaneous comments Women have a particular interest in
environment with our roles of taking care of the family. We need to reach a
lot more women. There will be a world wide "Day of Action" , Sept 6,
1995 -- Women across the world linking women and the Environment.
