Sustainable development viewpoints Inspirations
Inspirations: I do not have a commitment to "sustainable development".
I am committed however, to community building based on ecological
principles. My inspiration comes from the many and diverse strategies and
concrete examples from communities around the world who are working toward
self-reliance without cancelling out other species or destroying ecosystems
both home and elsewhere.
Concerns and encouragement I am critical of the concept of "sustainable
development" as promoted by the Brundtland Commission, and the
subsequent Earth Summit because it continues to promote a way of life that is
not only not sustainable, but depends on the continued exploitation of
people and places far removed from those who benefit most. The notion of "sustainable
development" is based on a mythological idea that everyone on the planet
should be able to have access to the standard of living presently available
to some North Americans and Europeans. Research shows that to support this
idea, we would immediately need to come up with two more planets. To me, "sustainable
development" is a smoke screen for business as usual and, as such, cannot
possibly provide the framework for business as usual and as such.
Changes needed I believe that the kinds of changes required
cannot be addressed at the global level alone and that it is perhaps arrogant
to think we can "change the world." Instead, we need to work at the
level of our competence, in our own lives, in our communities, and regions.
This is especially true in the so-called first-world where people consume
natural resources at a rate many more times that of people in less privileged
countries. At home, we can begin to change that way we relate to each other
and the world around us, in the light of global crisis facing humankind.
Community organization by watershed needs to take political precedence, where
local people can take direct responsibility for the well-being of their home
places. Governments and businesses which cannot act in the best interests of
all of life as a priority over profits should cease to exist.
Miscellaneous comments We have very little time left. The
experts tell us that in 10 - 15 years ecosystems around the world will begin
to collapse. This means there will be even fewer resources to go around for a
population that is exponentially increasing. The time to act is now.
Poley, Renee
