The brainstorming workshop brought together more than 75 stakeholders from all along the coffee supply chain for the first time to address sustainability issues related to the coffee sector with a view to identifying specific areas where multi-stakeholder, international co-operation for promoting sustainability in the sector would be most valuable and promising. On the basis of input from the workshop and follow-up consultations with stakeholders, a short list of areas where research should be pursued to further identify the feasibility of specific areas of action was compiled. Following the workshop, the Sustainable Commodity Initiative commissioned research to look into the following themes:
- Sustainability and contracts
- International co-operation for financing sustainable coffee production
- Inter-standards (and inter-initiative) co-ordination
A second follow-up workshop was organized to discuss areas for further action in more detail.
