Listening to Manitobans

By the end of this century, Manitoba could be 4-6 degrees C warmer, on average, than it is today. Sounds great? It isn't. Manitoba is particularly sensitive and vulnerable to climate change because of the important role that renewable resources - like forests and agriculture - play in our economy. Change of this magnitude would impact our economy, ecology, and health and well-being.

The Government of Manitoba formed a Task Force in April of 2001 to assist in the development of a provincial strategy to respond to the changing climate. The Task Force, chaired by the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, was charged with the following tasks:

  • To consult with a broad cross-section of Manitoban interests to determine how best the province can respond to the challenges and opportunities associated with climate change;
  • To raise the awareness of climate change and its potential implications for Manitoba;
  • To consider implications on the Manitoban economy, environment and human activity; and
  • To provide recommendations to the Government of Manitoba for addressing the mitigation and adaptation requirements for Manitoba, as well as the opportunities that will arise for Manitoba labour and businesses in providing proactive solutions for this global problem.
