Progress towards peace in many formerly war-torn regions may create unique opportunities to conserve biodiversity and generate local livelihoods, reinforcing human security and permitting people to lay down their arms. There are good reasons to believe initiatives for environmental cooperation can provide useful platforms for building broader initiatives that foster growth and stability in post-conflict settings.
IISD, in collaboration with several partner institutions, is exploring how to integrate conservation, development and peace-building. The purpose of the activity is to harness the positive impacts of conservation activities in post-conflict situations, in terms of peace-building and generation of livelihoods, and offer recommendations for an integrated approach to post-conflict reconstruction.
