Rio +5: From Agenda to Action

IISD has been actively involved in the formal processes reviewing sustainable development progress since the Earth Summit.

Rio+5 Forum

IISD prepared two Special Focus Reports as background materials for the Rio+5 Forum:

Trade and Sustainable Development

During the Forum:

Dr. Peter Hardi, IISD Senior Fellow and Program Director of Measurement and Indicators, gave a Presentation on "Sustainability Indicators" [ Listen - with RealPlayer (7min48sec)]
Dr. Konrad von Moltke, IISD Senior Fellow, gave an overview of "Managing Trade, Investments and Regional Commons" [ Listen - with RealPlayer (fast forward to 12:30, then 7min40sec)]
Dr. Arthur Hanson, IISD�s President and CEO, chaired the Workshop on �Information and Communications for Sustainable Development� [ Listen - with RealPlayer (7min37sec)]
Mr. Jim MacNeill, Chairperson of IISD�s Board, chaired the Workshop on �Financial Systems for Sustainable Development� [ Listen - with RealPlayer (8min5sec)]

In addition, IISD provided the Earth Council with information systems support to enable the creation of a the Rio+5 Virtual Forum. This web site provided real-time access to the discussions being held in Rio de Jaineiro and increased the ability of the public to participate in these meetings. The Virtual Forum now acts as the meeting archives and continues to provide opportunities to respond to issues raised during the Forum.

5th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD)

Continuing its earlier work, the Earth Negotiations Bulletin is providing full coverage and analysis of the CSD meetings in New York. This information is made available on a daily basis in both print and electronic versions.

Dr. Peter Hardi, IISD Senior Fellow, is also officially representing IISD at the CSD meeting as an accredited delegate.
