1997 marks the five year anniversary of the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Around the world, governments and civil society have been involved in various events:
- to assess progress made since the Earth Summit;
- to identify what has and hasn't worked (and why); and
- to share solutions to advance sustainability locally, nationally, and globally.
Most of these processes are designed to provide input into the
Earth Summit+5 - a Special Session of the
United Nations General Assembly to take place in New York, 23-27 June 1997.
Two major events leading up to the Special Session have been the:
- Rio+5 Forum - 13-19 March 1997; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This forum provided many non-government organizations with an opportunity to reflect and to determine how to translate
sustainable development from agenda to action.
- 5th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) - 7-25 April 1997; New York, USA.
At this meeting, governments are negotiating documents to be adopted at the Earth Summit+5 .
